A section of Malta's fortification is in dire need of restoration. Last October, part of the wall of the bastion beneath Argotti Gardens in Floriana collapsed, whilst it is obvious that the bastions at Fort St Elmo are crying out for restoration.

An ambitious 2-year project has therefore started on the Valletta Bastions. The project,in the hands of an Italo-Maltese venture, Cooperativa Archeologica and its Maltese partners Recoop and CTC, will initially focus on the strech of fortifications between St Andrew's Bastions, next to Biago Steps, and those below Auberge de Castille.

Minister for Resources & Rural Affairs George Pullicino said that this is part of a bigger project, co-funded by the EU, that will also restore sections of the Mdina and Vittoriosa bastions, and the Cittadella in Gozo, totalling 6 kilometres in all, 10% of the 60 kilometres stretch of fortifications around the Maltese Islands.
